You’re an Average Joe

Congrats! You’re hitting the average blinking rate. The average adult blinks around 15-20 times per minute, so give yourself a my-five for giving your eyes ample chance to recover.

You may think your eye movements are insignificant but in just a blink
of an eye, you can reveal your innermost thoughts and feelings – like if
you fancy the pants off your date or if you’re telling a fib about eating
your flatmate’s leftovers last night. While it does play into a larger part
of body language, it can be defining action that gives away the game -
here’s what your blinking patterns can reveal about you.

Liars don’t blink

Prolonged eye contact from a friend or a loved one? Rather than being so entranced with you that they’ve forgotten to blink, it could mean they’re telling you a porky. Why? Concocting lies is hard work and takes a lot of effort to hide the fact that you’re lying. The increased cognitive load causes the brain to pay less attention to eye blink rate which is why liars will blink a lot after they’ve told a lie.

Firstly, to find out if someone is lying, you’ll want to pay attention to how the person is blinking when they have nothing to lie about. Then when deception is at play, you may notice it quickly changes. Typically, if their blinking changes it will get less rapid during the lie and then increase dramatically right after the lie is told. However, it is important to note that blinking is just a piece of the puzzle. It’s vital to pay attention to other factors in their body language and tone to aid in the detection of deception.

The look of love

The world of love can be tricky to navigate. Along with other body language cues, the eyes can help us find our way. Blink rate is a significant indicator of mental arousal, and it can show us when we’re excited, nervous and even bored. If your date is fluttering their eyes at you, it could indicate that they’re pretty nervous but excited to be on the date with you. This is especially true if coupled with other classic nervous behaviour like sweating, fidgeting, or tapping.

The eyes of deception

We know the power that blinks can have when it comes to exposing our feelings, but can we use this knowledge to our advantage? Can we make our crush like us a little more by fluttering our eyes at them or help show that we’re super confident during an interview by holding prolonged eye contact? Well, in short, no. It turns out that trying to manipulate your blinking patterns can have the opposite effect. Intentional changes to your natural blinking habits can make you seem untrustworthy. So, it’s best to just be yourself and act naturally.

People that try to manipulate their body language to appear a certain way almost always fail. This is because we are largely unaware of our blinking in everyday situations and efforts to change that appears off which, in the end, can backfire as it causes the manipulator to appear incongruent in their communication.
